About Suboxone Treatment
What Is Suboxone Treatment?
Suboxone is an FDA-approved medication that combines buprenorphine and naloxone to treat opioid use disorder. Buprenorphine partially activates the same receptors as opioids, which relieves withdrawal and cravings without producing the high. That partial action also creates a built-in ceiling that lowers the risk of misuse and overdose.
At InSight, Suboxone is part of medication-assisted treatment, or MAT: medication combined with counseling and medical support, which is the standard of care for opioid addiction. You take your medication at home, keep your work and family routine, and see your care team on a schedule that fits your life.
- Relief from day one: Most patients feel withdrawal lift within the first hour after their first properly timed dose.
- Office-based and private: No daily clinic lines. Prescriptions are managed through regular office or telehealth visits.
- Counseling built in: Individual and group counseling are part of your plan, coordinated by the same team.
- Whole-person care: Anxiety, depression, ADHD, and other conditions are treated alongside your recovery by our psychiatric providers.
Your Options
Suboxone and Beyond: Your Medication Options
Suboxone is where most patients start, but it is not the only option. Your physician will recommend the medication that fits your history, your goals, and your daily life.
Suboxone Film and Tablets
Buprenorphine / Naloxone · Daily
The most widely used MAT medication. Dissolves under the tongue once daily at home. Flexible dosing makes it the usual starting point, and the naloxone component deters misuse.
Daily · At Home · Most Common
Subutex
Buprenorphine · Daily
Buprenorphine without naloxone, used when the combination product is not appropriate for a patient’s specific situation. Your physician will determine whether it fits your care plan.
Daily · Specific Situations
Sublocade
Extended-Release Buprenorphine · Monthly Injection
One injection a month at our office, with no daily dosing to remember and steady medication levels throughout the month. A strong option once you are stabilized on buprenorphine.
Monthly · No Daily Dosing
Brixadi
Extended-Release Buprenorphine · Weekly or Monthly
The flexible injectable: available in weekly and monthly forms with multiple dose strengths, useful earlier in treatment or when dosing needs fine-tuning.
Weekly or Monthly · Flexible
Vivitrol
Naltrexone · Monthly Injection
Different mechanism entirely: Vivitrol blocks opioid receptors rather than activating them, and also reduces alcohol cravings. It requires completing full detox before starting, and our team will help you plan that safely.
Monthly · Opioids and Alcohol

Who We Help
Who Suboxone Treatment Helps
Opioid addiction takes many forms, and no two patients arrive with the same story. If you recognize yourself anywhere below, treatment can start this week.
Fentanyl and Heroin
Fentanyl has made street opioids more dangerous than ever. Suboxone is one of the most effective tools for leaving fentanyl or heroin behind, and our physicians are experienced in the careful timing that starting after fentanyl requires.
Prescription Painkillers
Dependence on oxycodone, hydrocodone, or other prescribed opioids can happen to anyone, often starting from legitimate pain treatment. We treat it as the medical condition it is, without judgment.
Kratom and 7-OH
Kratom acts on the same receptors as opioids, and daily use can create real dependence. InSight runs one of the area's few dedicated kratom treatment programs, and buprenorphine-based treatment is often effective when kratom is hard to quit.
When You Have
Tried Before
Relapse does not mean treatment failed or that you failed. Many of our most successful patients arrived after several previous attempts. Each attempt teaches us what your plan needs this time.
Transitioning From Other Treatment
Moving from another program, another provider, or a residential facility? We coordinate transfers so there is no gap in your medication or your care.
Co-occurring
Mental Health
Mental health conditions and substance use disorders frequently co-occur, each feeding the other if treated in isolation. InSight's unique integrated model addresses both simultaneously, with your psychiatric provider and MAT team in direct communication from day one.
Not sure whether Suboxone is right for your situation? Call us at (615) 326-9918. A conversation costs nothing, and our team will help you understand your options, including whether a different medication might fit you better.
Our Care Process
Your First Week on Suboxone
Starting treatment can feel intimidating, so we have made the process as clear and low-barrier as possible. Here is exactly what happens from your first call through your first month.
1. Same-Day Evaluation
Call in the morning and you can often be seen that day. Your physician reviews your opioid use history, overall health, and goals, and answers every question before anything is prescribed.
2. Carefully Timed First Dose
Suboxone works best when your first dose is timed to early withdrawal, usually 12 to 24 hours after last use, longer for some opioids like fentanyl or methadone. Microdosing protocols are available as well. Your physician gives you an exact plan, and most patients feel dramatically better within an hour of that first dose.
3. Stabilization
Over the first days we fine-tune your dose until cravings are quiet and you feel normal, not medicated. Close follow-up during this window, in person or by telehealth, is how we get it right quickly.
4. Ongoing Recovery
Regular visits, counseling, and any psychiatric care you need, on a schedule that respects your work and family life. Telehealth keeps follow-ups convenient anywhere in Tennessee.

Setting the Record Straight
Common Misconceptions About Suboxone
Myths about Suboxone keep people trapped in addiction who could be treated this week. Here is what the evidence actually shows.
common myth
“Suboxone is just trading one addiction for another.”
Addiction means compulsive and repeated use despite ongoing negative consequences. Taking a prescribed, stable dose of a medication that lets you work, parent, and live is only dependence in the same way a blood pressure patient depends on their medication. Research consistently shows buprenorphine treatment cuts the risk of relapse and fatal overdose roughly in half, which is why it is an important treatment option.
common myth
“I have to hit rock bottom or suffer through days of withdrawal first.”
You need to be in early withdrawal for your first dose, usually less than a day after last use, not days of suffering. And there is no medical basis for waiting until things get worse. The best time to start is when you are ready, and we can usually start you the same day.
common myth
“I will be forced off it before I am ready.”
Treatment length is individual. Some patients taper after a period of stability; others benefit from long-term maintenance, and both are medically valid paths. Your timeline is set by your progress and your goals, decided together with your physician, never by an arbitrary schedule.
Frequently Asked Questions
Your Questions, Answered
Have more questions? Call us at (615) 326-9918 to schedule a same-day appointment.
Can I really start Suboxone the same day I call?
Often, yes. If you call during office hours, we work to schedule your evaluation that day or the next. Whether your first dose happens the same day depends on the timing of your last opioid use, and your physician will give you an exact plan at your visit.
How long do I need to wait after using before my first dose?
Typically 12 to 24 hours after short-acting opioids, so that you are in early withdrawal. Fentanyl and methadone can require longer. Taking Suboxone too soon can trigger sudden withdrawal, which is why your physician times this with you carefully. Do not guess; we will guide you.
Do you take insurance? What does treatment cost?
We accept most major plans, including Aetna, BlueCross BlueShield, Cigna, Humana, United Healthcare, and TennCare. Our team verifies your benefits before your first visit so you know your costs up front. If you are uninsured, call us and we will walk through your options.
Will Suboxone show up on a work drug test?
Standard workplace panels do not test for buprenorphine, and it does not cause a false positive for other opioids. Specialized panels can detect it if specifically requested. You are also protected: being in a medication-assisted treatment program is not something that employers can discriminate against.
Can I drive and work normally on Suboxone?
Yes. Once you are stabilized on a steady dose, Suboxone does not impair you the way opioids do. Most of our patients work full-time throughout treatment.
How long will I be on Suboxone?
It varies by patient. Some taper after a period of stability; many benefit from longer-term treatment, which research supports as safe and effective. There is no forced timeline at InSight. You and your physician decide together based on your progress.
Do you offer telehealth for Suboxone treatment?
Yes. After your initial evaluation, many follow-up visits can happen by secure video from anywhere in Tennessee. It is one of the main reasons patients from Nashville, Murfreesboro, and beyond choose InSight.
What if I relapse during treatment?
You keep your care team. Relapse is a known part of recovery for many people, and it is treated as clinical information, not grounds for dismissal. We adjust your plan and keep going.
