About Sublocade Treatment

What Is Sublocade?

Sublocade is an FDA-approved, extended-release form of buprenorphine given as a once-monthly injection by a healthcare provider. It slowly releases medication over the month, keeping levels steady so cravings and withdrawal stay quiet without daily dosing.

Because each dose is administered at our office, there is nothing to carry, store, or remember at home. Most patients start Sublocade after a short period of stabilization on oral buprenorphine such as Suboxone, and your physician will map out that transition with you.

Who We Help

Who Sublocade Helps

Sublocade is a strong fit for many patients in opioid recovery, especially when daily dosing gets in the way. Your physician will help you decide whether it fits your situation.

Stable on Suboxone, Ready for Simpler

If Suboxone is working but daily dosing is a burden, Sublocade delivers the same medication with one visit a month.

Busy Work and Family Lives

Travel, long shifts, and full schedules make daily medication easy to miss. A monthly injection removes that failure point.

When Missed Doses Cause Slips

If forgetting or skipping doses has led to cravings or setbacks, steady monthly coverage closes that gap.

Privacy Concerns

No medication at home means nothing to explain to family, roommates, or anyone else. Treatment stays between you and your care team.

Leaving Residential Treatment

Sublocade provides dependable protection during the vulnerable transition home from inpatient or residential care.

Co-occurring Mental Health

Depression, anxiety, PTSD, and ADHD are treated alongside your recovery by our psychiatric team, all in one place.

Our Care Process

Starting Sublocade, Step by Step

Sublocade has a short runway: a brief period on oral buprenorphine first, then your monthly injection routine begins. Here is how it works.

1. Evaluation

Your physician reviews your history and goals and confirms Sublocade is a fit. If you are new to treatment, we start you on oral buprenorphine the same day whenever appropriate.

2. Brief Stabilization

Sublocade usually requires at least seven days on a stable dose of oral buprenorphine such as Suboxone first. Already stable on Suboxone? You may be able to receive your first injection right away. Under Sublocade’s updated FDA label, treatment can also begin rapidly: a single dose of oral buprenorphine, one hour of observation, then your first injection the same day.

3. Your First Injection

A quick injection under the skin (for example the arm, hip or abdomen) at our office.

4. Monthly Visits

One appointment a month covers your injection and check-in, with counseling and psychiatric care scheduled around it. Telehealth handles anything in between.

Setting the Record Straight

Common Misconceptions About Sublocade

A monthly injection raises fair questions. Here is what patients most often get wrong about Sublocade.

common myth

“The injection must be painful.”

It is a small injection under the skin, not into muscle, and it takes seconds. Most patients describe brief stinging or pressure. A tender, small bump at the site afterward is normal and expected; it is the medication slowly releasing over the month.

common myth

“Once it is in, I have no control.”

You have a monthly decision point, not less control. Doses can be adjusted between injections, and if Sublocade is not right for you, switching back to daily medication is straightforward. Nothing about your plan is locked in.

common myth

“It is a stronger drug than Suboxone.”

Sublocade is the same medication as the buprenorphine in Suboxone, delivered differently. Instead of daily peaks and dips, it holds a steady level all month. Same medicine, smoother ride.

Frequently Asked Questions

Your Questions, Answered

Have more questions? Call us at (615) 326-9918 to schedule a same-day appointment.

Not necessarily. The updated FDA label allows a first injection after a single dose of oral buprenorphine and one hour of observation. Some patients still benefit from a stabilization week on Suboxone first, and your physician will recommend the path that fits your situation.

It is a quick injection under the skin of the abdomen, over in seconds. Most patients report mild stinging. Some soreness and a small bump at the site are normal for a while afterward.

Most major plans and TennCare cover Sublocade, though many require prior authorization. Our team handles the paperwork and verifies your coverage before your first injection so there are no surprises.

There is flexibility in the dosing windows for both weekly and monthly schedules. Brief delays in getting your next injection are easily tolerated, even more so after getting the first few injections. Call us and we will get you rescheduled quickly.

Yes. Some patients use Sublocade for a season of life and return to daily dosing later. Your physician manages the transition in both directions.

Treatment length is individual, and research supports longer-term treatment as safe and effective. You and your physician decide together based on your progress, never an arbitrary timeline.

Yes. Once stabilized, buprenorphine does not impair you. Avoid rubbing or massaging the injection site right after your visit; we will go over the simple aftercare with you.

Often, yes. New patients start with about a week of oral buprenorphine, then move to monthly injections. If you want the fewest daily decisions in early recovery, tell your physician; steady coverage can be exactly what that stage needs.
